Washington, DC – (November 21, 2023) –– Today, the Black Economic Alliance (BEA), a nonpartisan group of Black business leaders and aligned advocates, released the below statement from CEO Samantha Tweedy in response to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act:
“The right to vote is intrinsically linked to securing economic equity and prosperity in this country. For decades, courts have agreed that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act gives private citizens and civil rights groups the ability to defend this sacred right – which is especially important for Black Americans, whose right to vote has historically been and remains under attack.
“This ruling represents a drastic and dangerous departure from that precedent. We must not allow it to stand in the way of securing a more just and equitable democracy where Black Americans’ – and all Americans’ – votes are cast and counted.”
