WASHINGTON, D.C. – (November 8, 2021) Today, the Black Economic Alliance (BEA), a nonpartisan group of Black business leaders, issued the following statement on the appointment of Erica Williams as Chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board by the Securities and Exchange Commission:

“The Black Economic Alliance applauds the appointment of Erica Williams to be Chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), making her the first Black Chair in PCAOB’s history. Williams’ diverse mix of lived and professional experience as a trusted thought leader and seasoned practitioner on legal, regulatory, and complex business matters will strengthen PCAOB’s impact and credibility.

“Having advised three SEC chairs and former President Obama as Special Assistant and Associate Counsel, Williams brings years of first-hand experience to bear in this highly specialized role spearheading the PCAOB’s oversight of private companies’ and broker-dealers’ audits and financial reporting. As a Partner in the Government, Regulatory & Investigations Group at Kirkland & Ellis focusing on securities law violations, corporate crime, and complex business legal disputes, Williams honed the perspective necessary to protect investors and further the public interest as Chair of the PCAOB.

“Williams exemplifies the integrity, excellence, and accountability the American people deserve at the helm of the PCAOB. We look forward to supporting Williams in her efforts as Chair to foster informative, accurate, and independent financial reporting that drives more transparent and resilient capital markets.”
